PARISH NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS
 
On Sunday, January 7 there will be one service only at 10:00 am, a Choral Eucharist followed by lunch and a special Vestry meeting, with a movie & activities for the kids.

The flowers at the High Altar on January 7 are given to the honour and glory of God by Marie Stride & family in loving memory of Fred Stride.
 
The flowers at the Lady Altar on January 7 are given to the honour and glory of God by Marilyn & Dave Watson in loving memory of Sarah Elizabeth Cressel Watson. 
 
Rehearsal for families participating in the Epiphany service is on Saturday, January 6 at 11:00 am.
Pastoral Care Team meeting is on Saturday, January 6 at 1:00 pm.
Liturgy Team meeting is on Saturday, January 13 at 11:00 am.
 
Christmas Trees not sold are still at the Guelph Y and will need to be disposed of shortly. If you have a truck available and can assist Laurie Douglas in moving the trees to the Guelph Resource Centre, please contact Laurie at 519 837-8647.
 
Sign up for CSA SharesOur Summer CSA provider, Terra Verde Farms, is offering vegetable shares delivered to our parking lot in the summer on Thursday afternoons. To sign up please go to their website at  http://www.terraverdehomestead.com.
 
The Garden Committee is back on Sunday, January 7 with their popular Oktoberfest sausage sales on January 7, prior to the special Vestry meeting.  The price remains at $3.00 per, or 2/$5.00.  Thanks to all who supported us in 2017.  We hope your appetites are even heartier in 2018! 
 
Doors Open Guelph will be upon us soon enough and we need to settle on the design that St. Matthias and St. James want for the event.  Ideas have come forward regarding tour content, a musical component, some sort of art display, and food items produced in our kitchen.  Interested in helping at this planning stage? The church kitchen needs some attention. We plan to give the kitchen a thorough cleaning. Come and give us a hand. The more help we have the quicker it will be done. Food Drive - Let's kick off 2018 with donations of January's special items of the month ..... high fibre cereal or instant oatmeal and, just as popular in the new year, peanut butter.  
 
The Living Better on Less Board will meet January 9 at 7:00 pm in the library. Newcomers are most welcome.

Volunteer Opportunities at St. Matthias & St. James
Volunteer Management Coordinators (2)
 
X To maintain our volunteer database with regard to job descriptions, and safe church practices.
X Make sure there are waivers for photos etc -. Term of commitment: 2 years renewable.
 
Pastoral Care
 
X Worship coordinator to keep dates, volunteers and the priest organized for retirement homes; to maintain a rotation of home communion visits.
X Visitors: willing to be trained for regular visiting in people's homes in order to maintain connections and to ease loneliness.
X Supporters of worship services.
 
Property Management
 
X Committee to oversee and organize teams to maintain the interior of the physical plant. This will require a coordinator with a committee of planning and workers.
X Garden Committee: to add numbers and strength to the present committee.
X Sign coordinators (2) who will make sure the external signs are updated and made interesting.
 
Worship
 
X People interested in being readers, lay assistants, servers, chalice bearers (robed or from the congregation.)
X Choir members for both 9:15 and 11:00 am services; instrumentalists for 9:15 am.
X Greeters who will intentionally welcome and set new people at ease without having to also be sidespeople.
 
Art and Worship
 
X Upkeep of brass, silver, linen, etc.
X Imagine and create seasonal ambience by decoration and design.  
 
Public Relations
 
X People willing to add to the present website committee.
X Official parish photographers who will record events and people.
It is with sadness we announce the passing of Sarah Hayter on December 29, 2017 in her 100th year. Sarah was a very active and well loved parishioner since the 1950s. There will be a memorial service at St. Matthias & St. James on Wednesday, January 10, 2018 at 9:30 am to honour her presence as a loyal member of long standing. Her family is planning another memorial in the spring. Please keep Sarah and her family in your thoughts and prayers.Death notice is available at Guelph Today.
