Sparks is the first level of "Girl Guides of Canada” for girls ages 5-6. We meet Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m. for 1 hour at The Church of St. James the Apostle (Corner of Glasgow and Paisley Road) in Guelph, Ontario. Throughout our program we provide girls with a nurturing environment where they can build valuable skills that will last them a lifetime! As a Spark, girls learn to focus on the importance of being a friend towards one another, taking care of each other, and of the world around them.

History of Girl Guides of Canada

It all began in 1909 when girls in England demanded to take part in a Boy Scouts rally organized by Lord Baden-Powell at the Crystal Palace in London.  Baden-Powell was impressed and he asked his sister Agnes to create a program just for girls. This was the beginning of Guiding.

By 1910, the Guiding Movement had reached Canada and the first Unit was formed in St. Catherine's Ontario.  By 1912, there were Units in every province and many of Canada's most forward-thinking women banded together to form the Canadian Girl Guides Association.

The Church of St. James the Apostle has been very generous in reaching out to support The Girl Guides of Canada, by giving The 23rd Guelph Sparks a nice home for our meetings every week.  We thank the church for its generosity!

Any parent is always welcome to bring their daughter to one of our meetings at anytime during the school year to see if Sparks would be a program that would interest her.  We always welcome new girls between the ages of 5-6 to our unit!
